Following the reigns of David and Solomon, with the subsequent division of the nation, Biblical history shows there were no good kings in the resulting Northern Kingdom of Israel and only a handful of good kings in the Southern Kingdom of Judah. One such good king in Judah was Josiah, but the Scriptural narrative in 2 Kings 23 provides a stark picture of what he faced when he began to rule.
