Our topic today isn’t exactly filled with holiday cheer, but the times in which we’re living aren’t exactly like any others as well. My message is similar to the satire that Babylon Bee did this week. They showed a Christmas card with Joe and Jill Biden saying the White House sent out this card with the heartfelt message: “You will get sick and die this winter.”
Has there ever been another time in history where we’ve been fulfilling Bible prophecy like no other, aside from when Jesus walked this earth? Jesus described His first advent when He went into the synagogue and read from Isaiah 61:1 and partially verse 2. He read:
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,
In His incarnation, Jesus came as the suffering servant to shower God’s mercy and grace upon this lost and dying world. He came to show God’s love and to give the Good News that no one had to perish in their sins. This was evident in the fact that Jesus stopped reading Isaiah before the next line that the prophet wrote.
We are now at the point that what Jesus omitted the first time around is ready to come to fulfillment. The final two lines of Isaiah 61:2 depict a very different scenario in these current times just before His return in the 2nd Coming. Here is how this verse concludes:
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
This has a two-fold meaning:
- When Jesus comes again it will no longer be as a gentle lamb – as the loving Savior who would never (in many people’s belief) ever judge and harm anyone. No, this time it will be in the wrath of God to punish an unbelieving, unrepentant world.
- But look at what He will also do. At the same time that He comes with the sword of God, He will bring comfort to His children who believe and grieve by removing us from the judgment He will exact upon the earth and all unbelieving humanity during the Tribulation.
In this vein, the question we’re examining today is: What is one of the major reasons for God’s wrath?
