I want to do something a little different. We can call this a bonus offering for the week to encourage you in your walk with Christ. In the June 2022 issue of the Voice of the Martyrs Newsletter, there is an article titled Going at Any Cost about a young missionary by the name of John Chau. As I read the account of John’s life and death as a martyr for Jesus, it affected me greatly, and I wanted to share it with you who may not have seen this issue of VOM’s newsletter.
Let me start out before reading with a quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He once asked the following:
“Who stands fast? Only the man whose final standard is not his reason, his principles, his conscience, his freedom, or his virtue, but who is ready to sacrifice all this when he is called to obedient and responsible action in faith and in exclusive allegiance to God – the responsible man, who tries to make his whole life an answer to the question and call of God. Where are these responsible people?”
How can we consider John Chau’s sacrifice in light of eternity? Here is what Revelation 14:6 says:
Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people.
Think about this and what John Chau did. Let’s suppose that between now when this angel flies throughout the entire world proclaiming the Gospel during the Tribulation, that no one else reaches the hostile tribesmen on North Sentinel Island. Even with all the plagues that God has rained down upon the earth by this time, let’s also suppose that the North Sentinelese people don’t put it together despite the many judgments they’ve endured. They don’t give glory to the God of all creation.
However, when the angel speaks the Gospel and declares the Name of Jesus Christ, what if the tribesmen remember this young man and the Name that he spoke before he died? John approached these people upon the beach, his arms wide open, a smile on his face, and said nothing else but Jesus’ Name, and that Jesus loves them. Because of the hearts of stone within this people group, they did what they’ve always done: they killed this innocent man in cold blood.
When the angel flies overhead, conviction overwhelms them. They know that John came in the Name of Jesus, and they are guilty of murder. They killed the one who was bringing them the Good News of eternal life in God’s Kingdom. Because John gave it all to reach these people, when the voice of the angel penetrates deeply into their souls, they know the truth of Jesus Christ. They know that this one man sacrificed for them just as Jesus died for all of us.
The North Sentinelese surrender their hearts, humbly bowing to their Savior – all because John Chau was obedient to Christ to the very end.
Soli Deo Gloria
